Well, I didn't make it to 2,000 followers by Halloween, but twenty away is great! I'm hoping for 2K by the New Year. If you haven't followed please check it out. We have a lot of fun during the holidays.

More about the giveaway from hell. After it taking days and days, and two tearful breakdowns to find a non cheater winning entry for my Dog Days of Summer Giveaway, I found out that Book Depository does not have gift cards, and that was what the winner wanted. When I informed the winner that I could not find BD gift cards listed anywhere, so I didn't think they had them, they didn't believe me. I told them that if they had their heart set on BD (and not the other options of Amazon or Better World Books) that they could choose a book and go a couple of dollars over the $15 if they needed to, or they could choose a book and I would give them the difference rounded up in an Amazon gift card. I heard nothing back from them, so I spent extra time tweeting to ask people if they had ever seen or gotten a BD GC, I Googled it, and emailed the company... and nothing. I finally emailed back and said it really truly looked as though there were no gift cards. They finally relented to the book and Amazon GC, but waited to answer my emails, and then left their name off their address. Even with all their stalling they still got their book in less than a month from the time I picked the winner (and Book Depository books are shipped from the UK), BUT they still had to remark on Instagram that it took a long time to get the book. Really? Just be happy you won something, especially when part of the wait was your own fault. This all really made me feel bad.

I Kondoed Halloween! I had both of these giant totes full, plus three pop-up mesh hampers full of decorations, and after tossing items and filling two bags with donations I got it down to just the two totes. However...

After Halloween I tossed some more and filled another donation bag, and got it down to one tote! Marie Kondo would be so proud. Ha ha.

I am going to do a post about this next occurance, but I thought I'd touch on it today to explain why my blog hopping and commenting have been so sporadic, and why I have been easily upset by other things, like the giveaway problems. I had changed my literacy volunteer hours from the community center to the urban center a few months ago because a person who knew about the reading rewards program I had set up, because they worked with me at the university, somehow convinced the board of directors to give the program to her because she had a degree in remedial reading and I did not. The funny thing is the rewards program I set up was for regular readers because I felt that they were not being challenged, and recognized for their achievements. It was not for those needing tutoring help. I could have stayed and worked under her, but it would have killed me after all the work I put into it. I'm sure she won't be there for the long haul. She just wants something to put on her job resume.
Fast forward to the beginning of September when the urban center took on an intern who hates "backwards Boomers" as she referred to me and two other volunteers, who by the way are Gen-Xers not Boomers like me. We had worked very hard setting up and stocking a good sized honor system library at the center, it's like a Little Free Library, encouraging the kids to bring the books back, but if they wanted to keep them that was fine, too. We came in one afternoon, about a week after the intern was hired, and all of the books were gone. She had taken them over to the library and donated them for their book sale. She said the kids were never going to learn how to use the public library if they had easy access to books at the center. We tried to explain to her that the homes most of the kids at the center come from don't frequent the library, and that most of them do have library cards, but because their parents don't pay attention to those types of things the kids cards all have large overdue charges on them and they can't use them. That's one of the reasons the honor system library was so great. Anyway, we were gutted that the books were gone, and the kids were gutted that the books were gone, and now she expects us to walk the kids over to the public library once a week, with their useless library cards, and then back again in winter weather. And you guessed it, miss privileged pumpkin spice "activist" has excused herself from these excursions. I am hoping they find out the center's liability insurance won't cover these trips. Therefore, right now I have decided to stop volunteering until I can clear my head. I made sure I stayed to help with the Halloween party and then I quit.

My birthday was in October. I am forever fifty-nine! Ha ha. I will show you the books I was gifted in a Stacking the Shelves post later this month, and will also show you the items I received in my very first subscription box!
