LAST WEEK'S TMT

★★★★
(3.5)
YOUNG ADULT
STANDALONE?
FANTASY
Published November 20th - Netgalley
This book had it's problems with a mildly confusing and underexplained magical system, but the storyline and the magical elements were fresh and unique, and I was fully invested in the characters. I loved Clae. When I rated this book I thought it was the first in a series, but that is not indicated on Goodreads. If it ends up being a standalone, I may consider dropping Goodreads to three stars because the ending wasn't tight enough, but it will remain 3.5 stars here on the blog.

ADULT LITERARY FICTION
STANDALONE
HISTORICAL FICTION
Published December 4th - Netgalley
I was worried about this book because many readers who loved the author's first novel, THE THIRTEENTH TALE, didn't care for her second book (which I have but haven't read yet). I am happy to say this story has been a wonderful read for me so far. It is a page turner.

HOSTED BY
BOOKISH HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

I was telling everyone on my last THE SNIDGET post that I haven't listened to traditional holiday music in years and that one of my nontraditional go to's is the soundtrack from the 1994 Little Women film.

FULL SOUNDTRACK

ONE HOUR HARRY POTTER CHRISTMAS MIX
I also listen to the Harry Potter soundtracks, especially Sorcerer's Stone.

After reading whichever LITTLE HOUSE book had the Christmas stocking scene where the children received an orange, I told my mother that I wanted an orange in my stocking. She thought it was silly because there were always oranges in the fruit bowl and would not oblige me, so for a few Christmases after that I dutifully went into the kitchen on Christmas morning to get an orange to stick in my stocking before I took it upstairs to my room. I did this for my son from early on. We bought the little clementine oranges for this purpose. Sometime over the years it evolved into nuts, which I'm sure I read about in a Dickens novel. I still put a small bag of nuts from our local specialty nut shop in his stocking every year.

When my son was two years old we started buying him a book to open on Christmas Eve every year. The first one was WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. There were cookies involved, also.
🍪🍪🍪
This tradition fell out of favor around Baz turning thirteen, like so many others, but I have been waxing nostalgic lately and in hand with having another Hogwarts themed tree this year, we are going to give each other a book and cookies on Christmas Eve!

We had a TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS pop up book I read on Christmas Eve every year. We still have it. It's in the tree decorations tote. I am hoping to read the same book to my Someday Grandchildren.

For the past three years I have been reading A CHRISTMAS CAROL every December, and I intend to do it again this year.

Harry Potter has influenced our winter holiday celebrations since my son's Christmas Eve book in 1999 was HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE.

We always played a Potter themed board game on Christmas Eve, but now we play Scrabble.

We had Hogwarts themed trees twice and a dragon themed tree.

We watched as many of the HP movies as we could on Christmas Day.

And of course there were always Bertie Bott's in the stockings!
