In January I buddy re-read Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë, with Liis from Cover to Cover. This month I started reading Tales of Glass Town, Angria, and Gondal. I was led to believe by a blog review I had read that this was the collection of stories the Brontë siblings: Charlotte, Anne, Emily, and also their brother Branwell wrote as preteens and younger teens, edited into novel form; it is not. I really hate it when reviewers don't actually read the book they are talking about. There's a lengthy introduction by the editor with some wonderful facts like Charlotte's favorite childhood book being The Arabian Nights, but these little biographical gems are hidden amongst detailed nonessential analysis of the siblings feelings towards each other; mostly that of Charlotte and Branwell. I had to set it aside. I think the fact that I was disappointed it wasn't in novel form, and only contains a few of the sisters' short stories about Glass Town, Angria and Gondal in original form, ruined my mood. I am going to start over and also read a Graphic Novel I have about Glass Town.

Last month I watched the 1939 version of Wuthering Heights with Merle Oberon and Lawrence Olivier. This month I plan to watch the two hour PBS Masterpiece Theater biopic, To Walk Invisible. Both of these are available on Hoopla through your library.

Jolene sent Pioneer Girl, Laura Ingalls Wilder's autobiography, to me for Yule and I started reading it today, February 7th, on Laura's birthday. We are going to start buddy reading Farmer Boy, about Laura's huband's childhood, on his birthday February 13th. Even though Farmer Boy was published as second in the series we are reading it first because it is first chronologically.
This is Jolene's book overlooking the prairie towards the Ingalls farmstead. She has visited all of the Little House locations.

Right now I'm reading The Street by Ann Petry for Black History Month. This will be next. It will also fill a space in my NYT 100 Best Books of the 21st Century personal challenge. I read diversely as a norm most of the time, but in February I make it a point to read Black Voices Historical Fiction and History Nonfiction.

There are twenty-four book designs to choose from! There are also novelty designs like: a pizza slice, a chocolate chip cookie, cats, a full moon, a pickle, and flowers. NERDWAX is a small family-owned business and their cleaning cloths are made from recycled materials.

DeleteThose book cloths are amazing! I need several of them. The editions of the Little House books are so beautiful. I'm not usually a collector but I would definitely pick those up if I came across them. That's too bad about the Bronte book being misrepresented. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good a book is if it isn't what you expected.
ReplyDeleteYour comment about MSG on my blog is interesting. My migraines tend to be weather related (which I've also been told is a myth but am really sure it is not) and hormone related but my mother used to swear MSG caused her problems so it's worth tracking. I have meds that help/fix the issue and regular massages has really helped but after a week of them I'm worn out!
Migraines do really suck all the life and energy out of you. I hope you had time to fully rest up which isn't easy with a teen in the house. ☺

ReplyDeleteI remember watching The Little House in the Prairie on TV with my parents. The TV series was quite big back in the day and I learned much later that there are also books. I mean. Now I automatically wonder if a TV show or a film is based on a book as the first thing. The best stuff usually is, based on a book, I mean.
ReplyDeleteNo Super Bowl in Estonia! I think I saw a news snippet only about performance artists? But I can't even recall who the artist was. Currently, the Winter Olympics is on, though, so TV and media is full of skiing, skating and the other accompanying dramas that go along with Olympics. But, I don't really watch the Olympics. I really rather just read books.
Also... one more week, and spring semester will kick off at Uni. Looking at the schedule, lecture-wise it should be pretty easy, however, I do have a hundred hours of work experience to clock up. All I know at the moment is that I will be clocking up those hours at the parish libraries, 7 in total. But first I need ti figure out how to balance my nearly full time work, childcare, weekends at Uni and various deadlines for homework that land during the week. Roll on May - because it'll all be behind me then! XD

ReplyDeleteI do not watch the super bowl (sometimes I watch the ads or 1/2 time show after) but sitting and reading isn't going great either lol Although, I have 3 books going right now! (1 on Kindle for bedtime, 1 on audio for driving and one paperback that I'm attempting to read 2 chapters per day)
