I am curious why people read what they read, so tell me!
ONE BOOK A WEEK
In 2025 my goal is to continue to keep my reading down to one book a week.
THEMES
My June theme was Caribbean authors for Caribbean American Heritage Month and the Carib-A-Thon read-a-thon.
•
My July theme was Summer in the City, reading books set in New York City.

Patti Smith, the Godmother of Punk Rock, was showing her childhood copy of Pinocchio on Substack and I realized I had never read it. Seeing that I started a Patti Smith reads shelf on Goodreads, for titles she mentions reading in her own books and those she has mentions on Instagram and Substack, I decided to read it.

There's not much I can say in a review because this is the third book in a planned four bok series, except Intisar is the ultimate storyteller. I love authors who are solid (almost old-fashioned) storytellers with both well fleshed-out characters and great storylines. If you want to sample Intisar's storytelling without a big commitment, read Thorn... which can be read as a standalone even though it's considered the first book in the Dauntless Path trilogy. Thorne is also my favorite story of hers.

I liked these a lot. Not as much as my beloved Witch Hat Atelier, though. I had planned on reading all seven volumes during my 30-day trial, but I was sidetracked. I saw that Hoopla has them, so I'm happy about that.

ADULT FICTION
COZY?
Published 2010 - Kindle Unlimited Borrow

I don't know what this genre is. It's a little bit cozy a little bit Romance and lower Chick Lit-ish. All I know is I didn't care for it. I have only read Japanese novels that were Literary Fiction and the way the Goodreads summary was written I thought this was Literary Fiction, too, when it wasn't. In their reviews readers were saying how deep and philosophical the story was and one reviewer said the book, "... gently erased [her] soul." I hate that I have to keep saying this, but heaven help us if this is what people are considering deep soul-rendering, life changing Literary Fiction. If people were reading this as a cosy/romance and loving it... great, but don't be lauding it as fantastic Literary Fiction making me think it's not the shallow, simple read it is. One good thing that came of this is I now know there are books of this type by Japanese writers and can steer clear.
I READ A LOT MORE BOOKS THAN THESE
However, I'm overwhelmed right now, so I'll get to them next time!

Well, people had been raving about this book on my local library's Friday "What Are You Reading This Weekend" posts, and going strictly on the title I mistakenly thought it was a Fantasy. Ha! Mysteries, especially murder mystery thrillers, are definitely not my cup of tea, but I was still waiting for the book I had on hold for my Dog Days of Summer reading theme, so I decided to keep reading. The first half of the book was extremely slow and a bit boring, but the second half has been very good.
