This was my first book for April Disability Awareness Month and it was a total let down. I fell for the fabulous cover. Ha ha.

DISABILITY AWARNESS AND RIGHTS
Published 2020 - Own Ebook
I have so many notes on this book it's going to take me ages to write my Goodreads review. There were a few wonderful stories, but there were more of the poorly written, way off topic, entries. Some of them only had introductory sentences saying what their disability was and the rest of the story was about something that wasn't remotely connected to their disability. I bought this book to read about how people's disabilities affect their lives and it was amazing how many of them ended up being about trans rights, even when the author wasn't trans themselves. Many of the stories seemed like they were written a long time ago because they were talking about issues that aren't really problems any longer even taking into consideration the six years since its publication. I feel like I was robbed of my money.

This was Charlotte's first novel. Her agent couldn't find anyone who wanted to publish it, and it was still being sent out to publishers when she finished Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre, however, was picked up by the third publishing house it was sent to. This book reads very much like a first try at writing a novel. It was published two after her death by her husband. My thinking is she had changed her mind about having it published.

With only having read a portion of one other book about Charlotte I will stick my neck out and say if you can only read one book about Charlotte Brontë, make it this one. Gaskell, also  a writer of novels, was friends with Charlotte the last few years of her life and had first hand knowledge of the Brontës as well as access to a plethora of personal correspondence, scrapbooks made by the father, and the ability to interview people who knew the Brontë siblings as children. I would think the other books are just rearrangements of the information in this biography. I loved it and will be reading it again to annotate as soon as I get a physical copy.

I had requested a review copy on Edelweiss, but I received an email from NetGalley saying the publisher had selected a group of reviewers, based on downloads of previous The Wicked Years DRCs, for pre-approved copies. I was thrilled to get one.

I am ashamed to admit that I was given an instant access review copy ages ago, but even though Karina is one of my top favorite MG authors, it was forgotten about by me in all of my heart surgery drama. She is the author of my beloved Vanderbeekers series, and she is also one of the most genuinely kind and gracious authors I have ever come in contact with. This will be my first title for Asian-American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

This is the last book of Charlotte's I have to read. Liis, from Cover to Cover, and I read Villette last year, so it's too soon for me to re-read that one this year; although I might change my mind towards the end of the year. I didn't find Villette as well written as Jane Eyre, but it was definitely better than The Professor. I have hopes for this one being more like Jane Eyre. Her sister Emily was the inspiration for Shirley. Of course this is for my A Year of Brontë.
