looking forward to "YA HIGH SCHOOL LIFE PORTRAYALS " I'm kinda obsessed with High School dynamic now. I think it's because my kids are approaching that age. LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me that I need to get back to these, ha ha. From talking to so many high school bloggers over the years I have found out that the high school dynamic varies greatly, especially from one region to the other, and of course city vs. rural. I was once discussing my son's high school experience, which was 1. extremely diverse, and 2. miles better than middle school because you found your hang group(s), my son had three, and the other groups basically left you alone. There were no jocks abusing the band kids, or preppies insulting the emos. My son had friends of many colors, cultures, and religions and they all sat together at lunch.
ReplyDeleteThe blogger said I was lying, that there are no schools like that. She was from the Midwest, and where she is from that is probably the truth, sadly, but the Southern students and Midwestern students need to realize that high school is not the same everywhere and that should a beacon of hope for the future.
I think one of the factors is that in our school district things like debate team, math olympics team, and the Performing and Fine Arts groups, etc... are held in as high esteem as the sports groups. I think in the South and Midwest too much emphasis is put on Sports and cheerleading and that all snowballs into an I'm better than you, more worthy than you, scenario. I am not saying that the group dynamic was perfect at my son's high school, but if the preps didn't like the punk rockers, they just ignored them, they didn't find ways to negatively interact.
